Asus Padfone 2 : A Mobile in a Tablet!

Phones are becoming bigger and bigger, now a days. This will change the mobiles into tablets in future. Asus also is taking a step to it. The new Padfone 2 slides on the back of a tablet. Get surprise by reading the previous line? Yes, it’s a phone in a tablet. We can say that it’s an offer; buy one tab get a mobile free.

The idea of Asus is very good, because you can save your money, space, and weight the new Padfone. There are many rivals for the tablet as well as the mobile. The phone is sliding in the back of the tablet as shown in the below picture.

One of the main problems of the tablet is that, if we take away the phone the space is empty blank. But I know many of you will no t take it as a big problem.
The main rivals of the tablet are iPad 4Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 or the Sony Xperia Tablet Z. Let’s first take look on the phones specs and features and after the tablet’s.

Mobile Phone

Size and build
The phone has a 4.7-inch Screen. Its OS is Android 4.1.1 Jelly bean. The dimension of the screen is 137.9 x 68.9 x 9 mm which means 5.43 x 2.71 x 0.35-inches. It weights only 135g.

The device fells very secure in hands. The white glossy front is in contrast to a matte. It has a very long battery life, which is half of a tablet.

The design of the phone is very good to handle, and is very beautiful. Different from other phones the SIM card slot is placed on the top edge of the Padfone. The slot seems to be a tightly sealed unit. But it’s very easy to open and close with your nails.

The non-removable battery is placed inside the phone, so there is no need to open the phone until it wants to be repaired.

The body is not as good as the body of other phones such as HTC One or iPhone 5.

The phone is not thick as of the Lumia phones. It’s only has a standard height, weight and fat. It’s not so wider, but it satisfies a premium user.

The 4.8-inch display is one of the noticeable features of the phone. Although it’s comfortable in hand, it’s not a slim-beauty like the iPhone 5 or Galaxy S4.

The display is awesome, though it doesn’t have a full HD display like that of HTC One, and Sony Xperia Z. The resolution is little lesser than the LG Google Nexus 4.

Screen
The phone presents a rich, glossy, and colourful display. The phone has a display of Super IPS+ LCD capacitive touchscreen with 16M colours. Its display offers a quality of 312 pixels per inch density.

It also allows multitouch. Its display is protected by Corning Gorilla Glass. The colour reproduction and the contrast of the display are very good. The screen resolution is 720 x 1280 pixels.

Camera
The camera of Padfone 2 stands with the LG Optimus G, Sony Xperia Z, and Samsung Galaxy S4. It is of 13 Megapixel. The camera performs well in low-light conditions.

It has a position that’s far ahead from HTC One’s camera which’s 4 Ultrapixel. There are some difference between both; the HTC One’s sensor produce bigger pixels to suck more light.

The image taking in the phone is somewhat similar to the older Nokia smartphones. If you want to capture a full screen image, you need to reduce the quality o 10MP from 13MP.

The ratio so has black bars at the ends of the display.

The features such as the Scene settings and the HDR are very useful. The photos taken are sharp and crisp.

The images taken with flash aren’t bad. The low-light situations are the worst time to take images in most mobile cameras. To avoid this HTC One is featured with an Ultrapixel camera. There is no physical camera button, but the camera option is available in the lock screen.

The phone has a front facing camera of 1.2Megapixel resolution. The front facing camera is hidden when placed on the tablet’s docking section. To avoid the lack of a front camera in the front of the tablet, it has its own 1MP camera.

The rear camera of the phone acts as the tablet’s main camera. When the phone is docked the rear camera is exposed off.

The Padfone shoots video at 60 frames per second at 720p resolution or 1080p if you settle for 30fps.
The other features of the camera are Geo-tagging, touch focus, and face detection.

Performance and features
The Padfone 2 is powered by a Qualcomm 1.5 GHz quad-cores chip. The CPU is Quad-core 1.5 GHz Krait. The GPU of the phone is Qualcomm GPU. These specifications are enough to run the phone smoothly and fast. The multiple tasks are good in the phone.

The device is available in 16, 32, and 64 GB. The device has a 2 GB of RAM. Gaming on the phone doesn’t upset us, it gives good results. The multiple tasks done on the phone doesn’t get stuck off.

There are many features in the phone such as the SNS integration, Active noise cancellation with dedicated mic, TV-out (via MHL A/V link), ASUS Web Storage (50 GB storage), MP3/WAV/eAAC+ player, MP4/H.264/H.263 player, Organizer, Document viewer, Photo viewer/editor, Voice memo/dial, and Predictive text input (Swype).

The sensors of the phone are Accelerometer, gyro, proximity, and compass. Java can be used in the phone through Java MIDP emulator. GPS with A-GPS support is also included in the phone.

Asus also offers features such as Bluetooth v4.0 with A2DP and WiFi 802.11 a/b/g/n, Wi-Fi Direct, dual-band, and Wi-Fi hotspot.

Docking Station-tablet
The Padfone 2’s phone docking station is very impressive and quite smart. It is a tablet.

The phone can be fitted on the backside of the tablet. There is no chance for a fear that, if it will slip from the docking station, because its design is enough to hold the Padfone 2.

One of the main features of the tablet is that, if we dock the phone in the tablet it will not bulk up the device’s back. The 724g tablet and the 135g phone makes the device heavier. Totally it weights up 859g.

Holding the device landscape orientation, it makes a doubt in the user that it may slips and fall. The design of the tablet is good, and it’s made for phone to keep.

The tablet’s body and the performance are very smooth. Take a look at the docking station-tablet’s specs and features.

Screen and Performance
The tablet’s display is good enough but no other extra features or special display, because Asus had taken more care to make the phones display.
The image quality of the tablet is only 149ppi, which is far behind the phone’s display which is 312ppi.

The dimension of the docking station is 273 x 176.9 x 13.55 mm. The tablet is 10.1-inches in size. It comes with an IPS LCD display.
Asus haven’t taken care to make the tablet a better one, as a result, for sound the tablet only have a single speaker which is not enough for such a tablet.

The processor of the tablet is same as that of the phone- Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 8260A Dual-Core 1.5 GHz. The RAM and storage is the same.
The processor in the tablet is not enough to perform heavy multiple tasks in such a large device. Small multiple tasks are supported by the tab with less or no difficulty.

The battery offers a stand-by up to 352h and a talk time up to 16h. The power management of the tablet is good, as it tries to save maximum charge.

Software
There are many apps in the phone and the tablet. You can find many special extra apps in tablet such as the Pad only, though most work on both phone and tablet.

There are other apps like Buddy-Buzz, which collect social networking information from Twitter and Facebook.

There are also apps which help you to switch between the tablet and the phone quickly. There are other apps that shares posts across social networks.

After Words
There may be many questions, when we see saving, money, space and weight this way. There are many tablets and mobiles that are available in this price.

Everybody may think “what is the need of such a thing”? This question wants to be asked to the company itself. But this is a well designed, smart, and powerful device. The price of the device is £599.

Anyway this is a good offer from Asus, for those who need a tablet and a phone, that can be easily carried anywhere without any troubles.
